What is a Body Stone?
A Body Stone is a natural moisturizer designed to intensely nourish the body. Solid at room temperature, it softens when massaged over warm, dry skin. As you smooth a Stone over your body, it melts and absorbs, leaving even the driest areas soft, supple, and glowing.
When used regularly, the Body Stone invites a welcome moment of self-care in even the busiest of lifestyles. It's everyday magic.
What's in a Body Stone?
Our Body Stones are hand-crafted with simple, powerful ingredients that give you moisturizing results you can both see and feel. Each Body Stone starts with a core formula of cocoa butter, blended with four nourishing base oils: sweet almond, apricot kernel, avocado, and fractionated coconut. That's it. From there, Kate adds pure essential oils to provide benefits for both body and mind.
Daily Stone: unscented cocoa butter, sweet almond oil, apricot kernel oil, avocado oil, fractionated coconut oil, rose, frankincense, and neroli
Sleep Stone: unscented cocoa butter, sweet almond oil, apricot kernel oil, avocado oil, fractionated coconut oil, lavender, and chamomile
Grounding Stone: unscented cocoa butter, sweet almond oil, apricot kernel oil, avocado oil, fractionated coconut oil, vetiver, and bergamot
Naked Stone: raw cocoa butter, sweet almond oil, apricot kernel oil, avocado oil, and fractionated coconut oil
Mama Stone: unscented cocoa butter, sweet almond oil, apricot kernel oil, avocado oil, and fractionated coconut oil
Our ingredients are listed in INCI format on our packaging, which is pictured on each product page.
Are all of your ingredients organic?
When considering certifications, we made the decision to work with Made Safe to perform an in-depth review of our ingredients to ensure product safety. While our ingredients are not all certified organic, Body Stones are proudly Made Safe certified.
To receive a Made Safe certification, products must be thoroughly examined by researchers and scientists to ensure they are made without known behavioral toxins, carcinogens, developmental toxins, reproductive toxins, toxic solvents, or harmful VOCs. Ingredients are further examined by a chemist for bioaccumulation (builds up in our bodies), persistence (builds up in the environment), general ecosystem harm, as well as for aquatic and animal toxicity. This 360-degree assessment makes MADE SAFE™ the leading standard in the country, and we are extremely proud to carry their stamp of approval.
Are your products vegan?
Yes, our products are 100% vegan, with absolutely no animal testing. We are proudly certified cruelty-free by Leaping Bunny, whose certification requirements you may review here: https://www.leapingbunny.org/
Are your products gluten-free?
Yes, all of our products are gluten-free.
Who may be sensitive to your products?
Our formulations include nut oils and cocoa butter, so please do not use our Body Stones if you have or suspect a nut allergy or chocolate allergy. Developing an allergen-friendly Stone is certainly top of mind for us, so please stay posted on this!
What is the difference between core ingredients and essential oils?
Our core ingredients are those that make up the base formula for each and every Body Stone -- natural cocoa butter blended with our four nourishing base oils: sweet almond, apricot kernel, avocado, and fractionated coconut.
Our fragranced Stones are additionally enhanced by essential oils. These are extremely concentrated natural oils that possess medicinal qualities and powerful, beautiful aromas. Essential oils are distilled from the "essence" of plants (i.e., leaves, bark, roots, stems, flowers) -- and it is believed that this essence passes on benefits to the user. For instance, frankincense oil, which is distilled from tree sap, heals and restores our bodies and minds just as it heals the bark of a tree.
What is that white stuff on my Body Stone?
Have you ever seen a white-ish tint or shadow on chocolate? This is fat bloom: a naturally occurring property of cocoa butter. Just like cellulite or stretch marks, it’s a beautiful imperfection to embrace.
What is the difference between a full-size Body Stone and a Body Stone Mini?
Our full-size Body Stones are 3.5 oz and fill the palm of your hand. Our Body Stone Minis are 1.5 oz.
Body Stone Minis are a wonderful way to sample our product and determine which fragrance you love most. They are also especially lovely for hands, feet, lips, and tossing into your bag while on the go. However, we always recommend treating yourself to a full-size Body Stone for the full Kate McLeod experience.
Are Body Stones safe to use during pregnancy?
Our Mama Stone and Naked Stone are ideal for expecting mamas. Kate does not recommend using essential oils on the body during pregnancy due to their potency -- and these two Stones are all formulated without essential oils. This said, we always recommend reviewing your beauty and cosmetic products with your physician to ensure our Body Stones align with their medical guidance around your pregnancy.
How is a Body Stone different than a lotion bar?
Traditional body lotions tend to be formulated with only 2-3% cocoa butter, diluted with tons of water and a cocktail of harsh chemicals, additives, alcohols, and the ever vague "fragrance." They also often include less-than-luxurious ingredients like beeswax which feel sticky when applied. Our Body Stones are formulated with over 80% cocoa butter, blended with natural base oils designed to glide on like silk and deeply penetrate the skin. There's no water, no dilution, no nasties - just highly concentrated nourishment in the palm of your hand.
How do I apply my Body Stone?
Body Stones can be applied in five easy steps:
Start with dry skin, preferably after a relaxing hot bath or shower.
Prep your Body Stone for use by cupping it between your palms. Warming your Stone in your hands for just a few seconds ensures a smooth and luxurious application experience.
Glide your Stone across all areas of your body that need a little extra love. As our Body Stones are packed with richly nourishing cocoa butter and oils, use sparingly - one or two strokes on each body part will provide your skin all the loving care it needs.
Take some time to massage the oils into your skin. Unlike many lotion providers who add alcohol for a "quick dry" effect, we don't include alcohols in our formulations since they can be drying and damaging over time. Take these few moments of self-massage to breathe and soften into your most grounded, radiant self.
Finally, admire. Our Body Stones deliver deep nourishment that you can see – and inner benefits you can feel. Take an intentional moment to luxuriate in the intimate magic your Body Stone ritual invites into your life.
How do I incorporate the Body Stone into my daily routine?
We recommend applying your Body Stone after a warm bath or shower. After cleansing, your skin is most receptive to (and craves!) a luxurious moisturizing treatment. Towel dry your body before applying, and give yourself a few moments to massage the oils into your skin before dressing and easing into the rest of your day.
Are Body Stones non-comedogenic?
We are not strictly non-comedogenic, so we recommend patch testing prior to using your Body Stone as a facial moisturizer. Cocoa butter and our natural base oils are deeply nourishing, but they may be heavier than what your skin is used to.
How long does a Body Stone typically last?
Our Body Stones are highly concentrated nourishment for the skin - a little bit goes a long way. Depending on personal use, a full-size Body Stone will last 4-6 weeks, while our beloved Body Stone Minis will last 2-3 weeks.
My Body Stone just broke into pieces after multiple uses. What do I do now?
Embrace the broken bits - even the smallest pieces can be worked into the body for magical effects. When you get to the very end of your Stone, draw yourself a hot bath and toss in the remaining pieces. They’ll melt, you’ll soak - it’s truly a glorious deep-conditioning treatment for the body. You’ll emerge moisturized, rejuvenated, and unbelievably soft.
How should I store my Body Stone?
We recommend re-wrapping your Body Stone in its linen wrap after each use and storing it in our signature bamboo canister, if you’ve purchased one. Bamboo provides insulation from both heat and humidity and therefore makes an ideal storage environment for our product. Due to the sensitive nature of our ingredients, Body Stones should not be placed in direct sunlight or exposed to extreme heat.
Where are Body Stones made?
Kate first began crafting Body Stones in her Williamsburg kitchen in 2016, but we've certainly grown and expanded since then! Kate still oversees the hand pouring of each and every Body Stone, but we now work out of a beautiful Hudson Valley production facility -- which we affectionately call our “Butter Atelier” after our main ingredient, cocoa butter.
